What is information technology?

Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.

 

What makes IT important?

Today, IT is applied in every professional field such as economics, technology, banking, aviation, national security, education, etc.

The demand for IT is enormous. Some products can be:

- Managing software, information exchange within enterprises which makes business more effective.

- Applied software, games installed in mobile devices or personal computer for distraction.

- Application in ecommerce.

- Control software such as ATM, robot, projector, missile, etc.

- Software emulating activities in different sectors such as transport, medicine, etc.

- Software supporting fundamental research (math, physics, chemistry, etc.)

- Software supporting teaching and learning.

To operate and develop IT systems and applications, the society needs a huge and increasing human resources in coming years. According to the survey of 20,000 people on the site VietnamWorks, IT has been classified among top ten most favourate careers. The goal by the Vietnamese Government up to 2020 is to train one million IT workers, and upon the statistics by the Department of Information Technology – Ministry of Information and Communications, four hundreds universities and colleges will have trained 600,000 IT workers by 2020. These figures demonstrate a huge demand of IT human resource.
